Kathirikkai Murungakkai Poriyal ( Brinjal and Drumstick )

When Brinjal and Drumstick come together its marriage made in heaven ! If you haven't tried this, you are missing out on something so good !!! I got this recipe from my dear Induaunty in Chennai. She is an awesome cook, we have long hours of telephonic conversations during the week days, most of it is food related ;) . I have never had this dish in Kerala. So I am assuming, maybe this is an another awesome invention from Tamil Nadu :-) . No, you cannot try this one tomorrow. Today is the day for Brinjal and drumstick poriyal. So lets get started.


Brinjal - 5
Drumstick - 2
Onion - 1 medium (chopped )
Tomato - 1 large (chopped)
Oil - 2-3 tablespoons
Mustard seeds -  1 table spoon
Fennel Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Tumeric - 1 teaspoon
Sambhar powder ( 1 teaspoon ) [ I use Induaunty's special homemade Sambhar powder ]
Coconut - 1/4 cup and a little 
Jeera - 1/2 teaspoon
Garlic  - 2 cloves
Curry leaves
Salt - to taste

Coarsely grind Coconut, garlic and Jeera. Keep aside.
Heat oil in a skillet. Add mustard seeds, let it splutter.
Add the fennel seeds.
Add onion, curry leaves  and sauté
Add turmeric powder and sambhar powder, sauté well.
Add the tomatoes and sauté. Add salt.
Add the brinjal and drumstick pieces, add 1/2 cup water. Cover and cook .
Add the ground mixture of coconut, jeera and garlic.
Switch off flame when its done.

Enjoy it with some hot rice...Yummmm.....
